Soltas Energy CEO Interviewed on Green Radio & Internet Program
NEW YORK, Oct. 19, 2011 – Soltas Energy Corporation, a national solar-power solutions provider, announced today that CEO Andrew Barron Worden was a featured guest recently on a Nashville, Tenn.-based radio program that is focused on developments in alternative and renewable energy resources. In addition to reaching audiences in the Nashville area on WMDB-AM, Mr. Worden’s remarks on the program were also available at the 'Green and Healthy Communities' radio program page at Ustream.tv, an interactive broadcast platform.
Mr. Worden and 'Green and Healthy Communities' radio program radio program host, Theresa Kennedy, engaged in an informative discussion on the construction and operation of commercial-scale, solar-power solutions, which is Soltas Energy’s business along with its Nashville-based subsidiary, Choice Solar.
During the conversation, Mr. Worden discussed how the burgeoning solar-power industry supports U.S. energy independence, the benefit of solar to the economy and employment rolls, and issues and initiatives that could help promote even broader adoption of solar power in residential and non-residential markets.
One topic involved differences between cash-sale and power-provider-agreement (PPA) operating models. Soltas uses the PPA model, Mr. Worden said. “The difference really is in who is financing and operating the solar system. In the cash-sale model, you sell customers the solar system to put on their roof, which costs them several hundred thousand dollars and then they operate it and keep it up themselves.
“In the PPA model, we put up the money to install and operate the solar system and we rent the rooftop from the customer. We have an agreement with customers to sell them clean, solar electricity at retail rates that are actually lower than the local utility and they pay only for what they use. Typically, the company whose roof we rent is also a customer.”
The program also focused on the importance of incentives to the success of this fast-growing industry. “Right now, incentives are a great way to promote the adoption of solar power and put in place capacity that will significantly reduce dependence on fossil-fuel-based electricity,” Mr. Worden said.
“The right incentives help keep solar power competitive with the utility’s rates, which at this early point in the industry’s development provides a reason to put solar power capacity in place – whether that is a feed-in tariff like the Tennessee Valley Authority or mandates by states and municipalities that a certain percentage of the power that a utility delivers comes from an approved renewable resource.”
